Calle Ocho - "Eighth Street"
|
Description:
Explore the Cuban culture, from the 1960's to today's current issues, including why Little Havana may be lost to History. See the changes, as more Spanish-speaking, Non-Cubans move into the area, looking for low rents and employment, plus zoning law changes that threaten the cultural heritage of the area. Our first stop is the Freedom Tower & Museum. Next, we will drive around Marlins (Baseball) Park. We will drive through the "Little Havana" neighborhood, and view typical Cuban homes. Parking the car, we will enjoy a walking tour of the heart of Little Havana. Walk along "Cuban Memorial Blvd.", with monuments and displays. We will continue "Calle Ocho" and the "Walk of Fame", with tributes to Gloria Estafan, Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, Tito Puente, Roberto Duran, and Olga Guillot. We will visit a cigar factory, a famous nightclub, and "Domino Park". There will be time for lunch at a popular Cuban café, where we can ask the locals about the issues of the day. Hear about plans for redevelopment that may change the future of the entire neighborhood! The tour concludes with a return to your chosen location (any airport, cruise port, hotel or other address in Miami/Dade or Broward Counties).
