Description:
You’ll begin with a drive to the Historic District, where an Indian trail became Florida’s first road. See how a campsite became a trading post, post office, school, bank, and family home for our city’s founders. Our trail continues to Esplanade Park, and a visit to Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railroad. Discover where revenue agents watched as Al Capone’s men were “bootlegging” whiskey onto the trains, while James McCoy urged them to buy "the real McCoy" (whiskey).
See the original Swimming Hall of Fame, with Olympic-sized racing pools and Diving Well. Learn how it sparked a movie, and led to the city’s reputation as the “Spring Break Capital of the World”. Your tour also includes a drive along Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., home of over 100,000 oceanfront luxury hotel rooms. Over 100 years of history come alive as we travel from a campsite in 1897 to today's modern cruise ship port and the expansion of Fort Lauderdale International Airport.
Hear about many local business leaders of companies such as Waste Management, Blockbuster, Otis Elevator, Evinrude, Firestone, Port-A-Let, Winnebago, Alka-Seltzer, Seagram's Liquors, Paul Mitchell Hair Care, Sunglass Hut, and many more.
Many people had a hand in the city's development. Hear about Frank and Ivy Stranahan, Shirttail Charlie, Major William Lauderdale, Seminole Chiefs Billy Bowlegs and Oceola, Henry Flagler, N.B. Broward, Wayne Huizenga, Harris Hudson, Joseph Young, Floyd and Jane Wray, and others.
Also, Fort Lauderdale is home for celebrities, such as Gene Hackman, Reese Witherspoon, Lee Majors, David Cassidy, Duane Wade, Dennis Rodman, and many past celebrities.
