Little Havana & Calle Ocho Tour

Cuban Culture in Miami From the 1960s to Today
Calle Ocho - "Eighth Street"

Calle Ocho - "Eighth Street"

Price

Starting at $495

Duration

5 hours

Description

The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 brought 40, 000 Cubans to Miami, as they fled from the Communist government of Fidel Castro. They wanted to find an area where they could get affordable housing, and build an isolated community and retain their Cuban culture. West Miami became their new "Little Havana" along SW 8th Street ("Calle Ocho").

See the changes, as more Spanish-speaking, Non-Cubans move into the area, looking for low rents and employment, plus zoning law changes that threaten the cultural heritage of the area.  We will drive through the "Little Havana" neighborhood, and view typical Cuban homes.  Parking the car, we will enjoy a walking tour of the heart of Little Havana.  We will continue along the "Walk of Fame", with tributes to Gloria Estafan, Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, Tito Puente, Roberto Duran, and Olga Guillot.  We will visit a cigar factory, a famous nightclub, and "Domino Park".  There will be time for lunch at a popular Cuban café.  Try a Cuban sandwich, and maybe get a "Mojito" (a rum drink), or a Cuban coffee.  Plus, shop for gifts to take home.

Hear about plans for redevelopment that may change the future of the entire neighborhood!  The tour concludes with a return to your chosen location (any airport, cruise port, hotel or other address in Miami/Dade or Broward Counties).
